When I was a child my best friend got this book for his birthday and it blew my mind in terms of the artwork. It is a seemingly endless stack of what I called “crap art,” at the time. A style I tried to emulate for years as an art student. Amy and Jordan’s visages never left me after reading this masterpiece of pure insanity, all those years ago. Upon rereading I have come to discover some real nuggets of existential wisdom within, that were lost on me at the time. It is a truly demented and quick read, and it just makes me laugh.

This deliciously gruesome concatenation of misfortunes would have appealed to me so much more if the coloring style used for the cover had been used for the interior pages. I realize that this is a reprint of a classic, published originally in black and white, probably partly because of the artist's drawing preferences and partly because of the increased cost of printing in color. Nonetheless, the coloring used for the cover works so perfectly with the art in an ironic sort of way that I'd love to see an all-color edition published.
I don't write a lot of reviews, but it's crazy to me that a masterpiece like this doesn't have thousands. This is a gorgeous, wildly imaginative, and--for all its disturbing darkness--fun book that should be on the shelf (and mind) of any serious lover of comics.
While the message of 'Agony' has been said before in other forms of literature, the unique artwork and the horrifyingly funny adventures of the two hapless heroes of 'Agony' at the least gives the reader an opportunity to laugh at the human propensity to try to make personal tragedies meaningful in what is essentially a meaningless universe.

Make lemonade from lemons? Sometimes it is too difficult, especially when running for your life!

"RAW Magazine" issued solo works extracted from various issues of their comic book series; "Agony" was Mark Beyer's "One Shot". During the 1980's, soon after my wife presented with inoperable brain cancer, we both found solace in the comic books and in particular Beyer's extracts which were put together in a fairly short volume. Dark humor, of course, but both Janet and I shared the troubles of Amy and Jordan, and often laughed through our tears.

Amy and Jordan look like crosses between a human and an amoeba. Beyer tortures them both, Amy more than Jordon, for no discernible reason -- we faced the horrors of cancer with the same lack of knowledge.

Spear-throwing natives, bear attack, prisons, swallowed by cracks in the floor, tormented by strange creatures -- Amy lands in the hospital again and again, beheaded, eaten by a fish, stripped of her flesh, her head becomes a balloon.

Janet and I felt some of their same losses -- friends who abandoned us because they thought, well I don't know what, that cancer was catching? And we shared some of the faults in the social and familial systems as well. Black humor sometimes too close for comfort, and without any apparent reason for why we were chosen.

But beyond that Kafka-like philosophy, we both were impressed by Beyer's imagination and sense of design. There are no "normal" esthetics or anatomy. His characters live in a universe with its own laws -- and not the "normal" laws of comic book characters like Bugs Bunny or Superman. He obviously put enormous care into each panel.

We bought an edition of Hieronymus Bosch Complete Works and compared Beyer's more naïve drawings with Bosch's masterpieces. We both found similarities and differences that we would discuss for hours. And later near the end of her life I read to her from Franz Kafka The Complete Stories . We would often pull out that battered copy of "Agony" to refresh our memories.

The New York Review has now republished this masterpiece in a beautifully bound and printed version, with a very interesting introduction. I am very happy to have it back in new condition.

...in the whole entire history of the world of the Earth. I bought & devoured my first copy a million years ago and am super glad to see it back in print. 'Agony' is so extremely excellent in every way, it really oughta never go out of print again. Rereading it just now, I'm still just as blown away as I ever was by each lovely drawing (even when the panels depict unlovely events, as they often do). Plus I love the writing. Plus I love the single square image on each page. And having it now on my so I can carry it around wth me everywhere, that's a nice futuristic bonus. Especially 'cause I kinda long ago ruined my print copy. Anyway, if you're on the fence, you shouldn't be buy it, buy it now.
