I'm on the fence on if I'll be following this series. Unfortunately the idea behind the phenix does not line up with the reality that is this series. I'm not a fan of Sam & Ember's unhealthy obsession with him is annoying. He's an as*hole. Ember is pretty weak as a character & in some cases emotionally pathetic (with the ongoing whining).I do like Jackson but not enough to continue the series simply bc of him. All the other characters aren't developed enough to keep my interest. The next installment promises Ember becomes proactive & that has some possibilities. Overall the book wasn't great. In fact 50% I thought of DNF-ing it. (I did finish it)The series isn't awful some people really enjoy it. I'm unfortunately not one of them. This series feels a lot like running on a treadmill your logging miles (pages) but you not really going anywhere (no resolution). It's basically a ton of possibilities & in my case I'm sick of running after the proverbial carrot. At this point I wouldn't recommend the series unless your goal is to fight insomnia bc this book was yawn inducing. 2 stars

Wicked Embers A Souls of Fire Novel Keri Arthur Books Reviews
Never disappointed with Keri Arthur! While I adore all paranormal/supernatural books I was especially impressed with this new series. Not much phoenix sub-genres! (Cynthia Eden just started a phoenix series that is also riveting, but different from keri Arthur)
ARTHUR ALWAYS HAD A PERMANENT PLACE ON MY KEEPER BOOKCASE!
Fast paced story revolves around a phoenix and her soul mate, not to be confused with love of her life. There is a new deadly infectious red vampire pathogen raving through society. She must work together with allies to put a stop to these vicious murders while also finding balance in her personal life. This was hard to put down~!
After I finished book one, I could hardly wait for the second to be released. However, I was slightly disappointed.
Unfortunately, this book fell into what I like to call 'the second book bridge syndrome'. While it still had all of the authors signature flare, steamy romance, and kick butt characters; it literally was just a bridge from book one to three.
It tired up some of the questions left from book one and set the stage quite nicely for book three hence my nickname of 'the second book bridge syndrome'. So honestly, it was kinda boring for me, especially seeing as how the 'monster' in this book felt like an afterthought and want really important to the bigger story.
So, there you have it. It wasn't awful but it wasn't great and I expect a bit more from this author.
First off, I have to warn readers that you need to reread the first book in the Souls of Fire series immediately before this one. This is less a sequel and more of a continuation. Worse, it's a continuation without the necessary exposition to remind people of what everybody did in the last book. I have an awesome memory for books, especially ones as close together as these two, and i found myself getting frustrated a lot by what I was supposed to have kept track of from book one. It's still a good read though. Arthur doesn't really do paranormal romance so much as urban fantasy with sex scenes. The two main leads are awesome and the supporting cast is well rounded, all fueling a plot that continues the rocket shot of the first and keeps it barreling towards the final page. I almost typed to the end instead of final page but after the experience of how this book started I can't trust it ended. Spook Squad also told one long story and so does Dark Angels but in those cases I never felt like I wasn't getting separate books with each new installment. Hopefully the next book in this series will feel more like an independent book or at least contain more necessary exposition because, hey, this is Keri Arthur. It's not like I'm gonna not buy anything she writes...
Two threads are followed in this second story about Emberly, a phoenix who is now working as a PI along with Jackson, a fire fae. They are still looking for the researchers’ notes in hopes of finding a cure for the failed experiment of isolating the enzyme believed to make vampires immortal. Most of these new vampires made from this virus are insane and their numbers are growing. Also looking for the notes are different factions of the sindicati who don’t want to believe that Em and Jackson don’t have them.
The other thread which introduces us to a bigger threat on the horizon, deals with a creature Em sees during prophetic dreams, hunting victims.
As always, we get a lot of detailed action scenes, the main characters are likeable and the threats faced are interesting. And we get more information about Sam, Em’s ex-lover, as well as why he was acting like such a jerk in the first book.
I’ve read every book this author has ever published, and that started long before the Riley Jensen series. But this is the first one where I kept losing interest in the story. It’s taken me days to get through this book as I kept putting it down and found other things to do. There were two reasons for that.
The first was a sense of repetition in the storyline. Yes, it does move along, but it’s like many of the same scenes are repeated in different places and scenarios, at least as far as how Em handles things. And yes, I do agree with others that this also has the feel of both Riley’s and Risa’s stories.
The other was I only vaguely remember the first book and kept getting lost with who is who when different characters are mentioned, especially ones that don’t make an appearance in this book for one reason or another. I’m sure my lack of keeping focus on this story just made this issue worse for me.
